In recent years in the Diocese of Central Newfoundland, a Sunday in the calendar year has been designated as ACW Sunday, usually the Sunday after Easter. The purpose is to focus on the work of the ACW, with appropriate resources prepared for the day. Ladies throughout our diocese, in each primary branch, lead or participate in the worship.
This year, the theme was “Moving Forward in a Changing World.” It was a very fitting theme, as over the past couple of years our model for moving forward has evolved. We no longer have an ACW diocesan executive or district branch committees, as it became too difficult to fill those roles. Instead, a diocesan coordinator was appointed by Bishop John with assistance from outgoing members of the executive. The coordinator then chose an ACW diocesan treasurer and a coordinator for each of our six districts.
It is with much thanksgiving, joy, and excitement that we can say we are indeed moving forward. The hard work and commitment of all our members remain as strong as ever. They continue to be the “Hands and Feet of Christ” to many, both near and far.
In spite of these changes, we have been able to honour our financial commitments at the diocesan level, including the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund, The Gathering Place, Grace Sparks House, Council of the North, and Cara Transition House. Our primary branches remain faithful in submitting their assessments and continuing their essential work at the local level. It is truly a team effort and beautiful to behold!
At the primary level, branches continue donating money, clothing, and toiletries to The Gathering Place, the Janeway, Ronald McDonald House, Cara House, Grace Sparks House, local churches, schools, and other worthy causes. Members also visit the sick and shut-in, prepare funeral receptions, send birthday cards, and knit essential items. Recently, several primary branches began supporting the Eastern Diocese’s “Community Connector Bus.”
In the first year of our model change, the coordinator and treasurer traveled to five of our District Fellowship Meetings, as well as enjoying a wonderful visit with the ladies in Hermitage-Sandyville. Each gathering began with worship, followed by a delicious meal, information sharing, fun, and fellowship. In 2025, a total of 315 women throughout our diocese attended these meetings, and attendance this year was remarkably similar. Everyone was delighted to gather in person and encourage one another. Offerings from some of our worship services were donated to the Janeway, Alongside Hope, and the Children’s Hospital in Jerusalem.
Much of our communication happens through phone calls, which is proving to be far more effective than texting or email. There is truly something special about hearing a human voice, and it gives us a wonderful opportunity to really get to know and appreciate one another.
While some of our primary branches have had to close over time, it is worth noting that a few have since reopened, and several active branches are even growing in membership!
Both the coordinator and treasurer extend heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Bishop John, Archdeacon Terry, and Crystal for their unwavering support. Thank you to all our clergy who support our ACW members and recognize the value of their ministry. Thank you as well to our district coordinators, primary branch presidents, every member of our ACW across the diocese, and all who support this work in any way.
With God’s help, and with the support of one another, our good works and ministry will continue to thrive.
