On Friday, February 20th, 2026, the Parish of Bay Roberts / Coley’s Point Youth Band, “Refuge,” visited the Bay Roberts Retirement Centre. The band usually practices each week, but this week they spent their rehearsal time singing for the residents at BRRC. It was an enjoyable time for everyone. The residents loved hearing these young people sing contemporary and traditional Christian music. The band members also enjoyed performing some songs they love. They were treated to some Rice Krispie cookies which were delicious, and we shared some valentine chocolates with the residents.

We are building intergenerational relationships and understanding as this is our second visit. Each were asked what do you enjoy doing? Our youth enjoy dance, hockey, and playing guitar. When the seniors were young, among other things, they enjoyed playing tag, copy house, tiddlywinks, and with dolls. Times have changed!

The young and young at heart had a chance to mingle and chat. The youth band and leaders then enjoyed a supper at a local restaurant for more relationship building among the group. Our parish is blessed to have such a wonderful group of youth. Their kindness and care for others is inspiring.

Many people in the Parish of Bay Roberts/Coley’s Point know somebody who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or dementia. Our parish’s Busy Hands Crafters group was wondering what we could do to help, so we decided to make fidget mats. At a youth group night, the young people cut out letters that could be sewn onto the mats. Some ladies assembled base mats and constructed ‘fidget’ attachments at home, and many participants donated fabrics and items that would enable us to assemble a larger quantity than we had originally thought was possible.

On our March workday, some people brought along their sewing machines. We opened with prayer, and then the assembling of the mats began. We all enjoyed time together, sharing ideas, and making these mats. We hope that they will be enjoyed by those who receive them. We are so grateful for the time, resources, and talent that were so freely given to make this project possible. Thank you to all involved. May God bless you for your generosity.

On November 30th, 2022, people from the Parishes of Bay Roberts/Coley’s Point, Port De Grave, the Resurrection, and Shearstown took some time away from their busy lives and gathered at St Mark’s Church in Shearstown for an Advent Quiet Day. The reflections for the day were based on the Advent resource “The Way of Love,” produced by the Episcopal Church (which can be found here: https://www.episcopalchurch.org/journeying-way-love/). Father Paul Thoms spoke about the importance of creating a rule of life as a guide to lead us in this journey and to keep us on track as we say “yes” to the way of love. Canon Christine Lynch spoke about what it means to share this journey with family and friends, just as Mary shared the good news of the angel’s visit with her cousin Elizabeth. How are we called to share the good news about God’s love with our family and friends? Father Gerald Westcott spoke about living in community and sharing God’s love with others we encounter on the journey. Beautiful music provided by Helena Thoms and Hubert Somerton lifted our hearts up in joy.

Thank you to St. Mark’s Church for hosting this event and for providing a mid-morning snack along with delicious soups and desserts for lunch. And let us not forget the projectile coffee!

This was a day filled with love as old friendships were renewed and new friendships were formed. Our very own Mary and Elizabeth (photo included), who are long-time friends, were delighted to spend this time together. The Holy Spirit is moving in this place, calling us together as community, sharing God’s love for each other as we grow in faith and service. All of those in attendance felt blessed. We are looking forward to future events as we discover new ways of working together in this mission area.
