My daughter is a midwife who works as a locum in Nunavit, and when she mentioned this initiative, I immediately started to share it with my friends far and wide. I am pleased to say many quilts have been donated.

Pictured at the top of this page are Evelyn MacDonald and Mary Carroll, shown with the quilts that they made and donated. Do you quilt, or do you have a quilt you would like to donate? The ideal quilt for this project is 40”x46.”

Here is more information from One Plane Away about what they do (from their website):

“Nunavut has the highest birth rate in Canada. At 21.4% live births per 1,000 people in 2020, Nunavut’s birth rate is double the national average of 9.4%. The birth rate in Nunavut continues to grow at a faster rate than any other Canadian province or territory

Unfortunately, one of the most significant issues in Nunavut is lack of access. Nunavut consists of 25 fly-in only communities. This means that all supplies, including food, and baby supplies has to come in on the planes or if the community has water access, on the yearly sealift.

As you can imagine, essential baby items such as diapers, wipes, clothing, winter gear, etc. is very expensive and in limited supply. Ordering the supplies off of online shops is also not an option due to high shipping costs and some websites do not accept PO boxes as valid addresses, which is the only way we can receive our mail in the Territory.

One Plane Away’s primary objective is to help support Nunavut babies in need by giving them the clothing and supplies that are often unavailable or unattainable.”

If you would like to help, their Canada Helps page is: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/one-plane-away-donations/

You can also follow them on Facebook (search for “One Plane Away”). If you have a quilt to donate, it can be sent to:

The candles for the Advent wreath were dedicated in memory of William Ingram, who passed away in 2022; the white altar candles were donated in memory of Peter Ingram, who passed in 2021. The Ingrams have been involved in our church for years, and their families still continue this tradition. They were was both “salt of the earth” men with great senses of humour, who helped everyone and took such pride in their church.

Thank you to their families for the donation. Their light will continue.

She had received an email from a group of women in Langley, British Columbia, who wanted to send lap quilts to some residents who had been displaced and/or lost their homes on September 24th, 2022.

I live in Margaree – Fox Roost, which is a 10-minute drive from Port aux Basques. 4 homes and countless stages were destroyed here; it will forever change the layout of our communities. We also had 2 families that moved in from other areas who had also displaced.

Once Joy made contact, things happened quickly. The quilts arrived, and I immediately started to distribute them. Each person who received a quilt was overjoyed. Some people had left their home with not much more than the clothes on their backs, so to receive a warm quilt was a lovely gesture.

This is what Joy sent me about her group:

For several weeks in the spring, seven or eight women from St. Oswald’s gathered in the parish hall to cut and piece “I Spy” quilts. I was about to do a major downsizing, and that meant there was rather a lot of fabric to be used up! Two of us were quilters, and the others pressed and cut, pinned and hemmed. It was amazing what so many willing hands could accomplish! The first dozen quilts went to Ukrainian refugees in nearby Abbotsford. Then another batch went off to Kimz Angels, a church run ‘store’ in Langley where low income people can shop with dignity—and no actual money. Then: Newfoundland. We were more than delighted to find out that quilts would be welcome.

You can see some of the recipients in Newfoundland in the photographs with this article. I am happy to say that more quilts are on route to this area, and again will be distributed proudly.

I do know that some quilts were also sent to this part of the province from others in Newfoundland. We are moved by the kindness and generosity shown to us by such gifts.

Devastation After Hurricane Fiona

Hurricane Fiona was a category 4 Atlantic hurricane that hit many places in Atlantic Canada in late September of 2022. It was the most costly post-tropical storm to hit our part of the world on record, and when it reached Newfoundland’s west coast, it had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (110 km/h).

These photographs were submitted to Anglican Life by Karen Simon, and the destroyed house was her mother’s home. Many homes were destroyed by Fiona, and the rebuilding will be going on for a long time. Our own Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund has a way that you can help. Go to their website at: pwrdf.org/give-today and choose “Hurricane Fiona.”

A Night of Music

A night of music was held on September 28th. It was a time to come together and where troubles were no more. People in attendance could feel the peace and joy. In the photograph below are pictured, from left to right: Leo, Ray, Viola, Glenda, Leona, Betty, Jim, and Dave.

Who remembers their Sunday School attendance cards? One of the readers of Anglican Life, Karen Simon (of Margaree Fox-Roost) sent in this one that belonged to her mother, Mary Carter. It’s from 1952 and includes the quote from John 10:3 that says, “He calleth His own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.” Thanks, Karen!
