They also meet once for a retreat in the spring, and for a social time in June. As a part of our meetings we have guest speakers who share with us. Our January meeting had the editor of the Anglican Life, Mrs Emily Rowe, join us and share how Anglican Life and the Anglican Journal are put together for publication. It was a very informative session.

Our next three speakers are the Rev’d Tracey Sullivan on Home Again Furniture Bank; Mr Peter Chalker, the Diocesan Archivist (ENL); and Mr Rudy Singleton of Emmaus House, a joint food bank between the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches. Our retreat will be in May, and our social in June. This has been a great opportunity to get together and keep in touch with the ministries of the Church.

The Anglican Charitable Foundation for Children (ACFC) had its beginning when Bishop Edward Feild responded to a pressing need to look after families who had been affected by the cholera outbreak of 1854. On Ash Wednesday, which fell on February 21 in 1855, the bishop provided a house near the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in St. John’s which became home to eight orphans in the care of a widow. This orphanage gave rise to the Shannon Munn Memorial Orphanage for boys in 1918, which was located at what is now the Arts and Culture Centre, and the T.R. Job Memorial Orphanage for girls, which was on Strawberry Marsh Road. A new combined orphanage, “Exon House,” was opened in 1966 and closed in 1969. Over 2000 children and a number of widows were cared for in those 124 years.

In 1974, ACFC was established with the assets from the sale of Exon House. With the restructuring of the Diocese of Newfoundland into three dioceses in 1976, each diocesan Board of Trustees continues to assist children and young people in need with financial assistance, medical, education bursaries, and emergency funding. Provincially, the ACFC has assisted 40,000 individuals and distributed in excess of 8 million dollars.

On October 3rd, 2022, the 400th meeting of the ENL Board of Trustees was held to mark this milestone. For further information on this ministry of the Church, please visit your diocesan website under ACFC.

On March 21st, 1855, Bishop Edward Feild established a home for widows and orphans. In time, there was established the Shannon Munn Memorial Orphanage for boys and the T.R. Job Memorial Orphanage for girls. These two orphanages became the new orphanage, “Exon House,” which was sold in 1974, and the funds invested newly established Anglican Charitable Foundation for Children. Over the 46 year history of the ACFC, records show just over 40,000 children were assisted through clothing allowances, educational bursaries, medical assistance, camps, and emergencies totalling in excess of $5,000,000. This does not include contributions over the years of\$3,000,000 to assist diocesan camps, diocesan counselling centres, shelters such as transition houses, group homes, Iris Kirby House, and the School for the Deaf. In recent years, contributions have been primarily directed to recipients according to our current guidelines. All this began with a five pound donation to Bishop Feild in 1855.

At this year’s AGM via Zoom, the following were elected as officers of the Charity: The Rev’d Canon John Courage (Chairperson), Mr Dennis Porter (Vice Chairperson), Mrs Emily Rowe (Secretary) and Mr Stephen Pinsent (Treasurer). \

For further information on the Orphanage and the ACFC, go to your Diocesan Website under ACFC or read the book The Church of England Orphanage in Newfoundland, by the late Bishop Geoff Peddle, which is available for purchase by writing to:
rescentr@anglicanenl.net. To enquire on making a donation or estate planning contact our diocesan planned giving consultant, Mr Kevin Smith, at:
