Sunday, June 16th, was a very special Sunday at the Church of the Ascension, as Bishop Samuel Rose was present for the service of confirmation. Let us pray for those six young people that, having received the sacrament of confirmation, the Holy Spirit will ever be with them, and that they will continue to aim to serve God throughout their lives. Amen.

This year, once again, we used St. Margaret’s Boat as the vehicle for our charitable Advent project. St. Margaret was well known for her charitable works especially among the homeless, and since our mission is “reaching out to others,” we felt that using St. Margaret again as our role model, we too would aim to help somevulnerable individuals. It was decided that we would support “Thrive,” which is part of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Community Youth Networks. Our aim was to fill the boat with personal care donations for this organization, whose primarily concern is “supporting youth who live in poverty and have limited access to mainstream programs and services.”

The parishioners came on board and gave so generously that we did indeed swamp the boat. At the same time, this year’s confirmation candidates (as seen in the photo) were given the opportunity to be caught up in this spirit ofgiving. Mia Penney, a representative from Thrive, came to receive our boatload of gifts during the Sunday service on December 17th. Mia, along with other Thrive leaders, will ensure that these gifts will be distributed according to individual needs, and hopefully they will bring a measure of joy to the recipients during the Christmas season and into the New Year.

In keeping with our motto ‘Reaching out to Others,’ this year for our Lenten outreach at the Ascension in Mount Pearl we partnered with the CNIB to provide materials for two worthy projects. One of the projects is the CNIB’s Annual Family Camp, and the other is the PREP Program. The camp is fully adapted to promote skill building and memory making for children living with sight loss. The PREP program provides those with sight loss the tools, skills, and social connections needed to navigate post-secondary life.

A list of possible donations was listed for both projects. Parishioners were delighted with the idea, and placed their donations in a tent that had been set up at the front of the church for that purpose.

On April 3rd, Amanda Halliday from the CNIB came to our 11:00 service, thanked the congregation on behalf of the CNIB, and collected the items that had been so generously donated by our parish.

Our mission is “reaching out to others,” and that is why once again we chose an Advent project related to our mission. We focused especially on the charitable work of Saint Margaret, who is the patron saint of the homeless, the falsely accused, the mentally ill, and the orphaned, when we were planning the project. Since we are still in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to do something which would keep us within the mandated guidelines. Parishioners were encouraged to purchase books suited for two-to-four-year-old children, and to place them in Saint Margaret’s Boat that was situated in the side foyer. So, given the generosity of our parishioners, we gradually filled our boat with books for the Daybreak Child and Parent Centre. These books were presented and graciously received by Ms. Bethel, the Educational Director from the Centre during the morning service on December 12th. We trust that these books will bring much delight to the children who frequent this centre.
