]]> On Sunday September 22nd, a service of Choral Matins was held at the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in St. John’s to mark the 85th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain. The service was attended by Her Honour, The Honourable Joan Marie J. Aylward, O.N.L., Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, and The Royal Canadian Air Force Association 150 (North Atlantic Wing).

]]> On Sunday September 14th, a block party was held by the Anglican Cathedral, Gower Street United, St. Andrews’s Presbyterian, and the Roman Catholic Basilica. The street in front of our Cathedral was blocked from traffic to allow for fellowship between the churches, and also with the surrounding neighbourhood. It was a wonderful afternoon of dancing, entertainment, a bouncy castle, hotdogs, and popcorn.

]]> The 4th annual “Quilt, Rug Hooking, and Stitching @ The Cathedral” took place on October 25th–26th, 2024. The event team—consisting of The Very Rev’d Roger Whalen, Janet Hewson, Susan Furneaux, Heather Wiseman, Donna Mactavish, and Sharon Whalen—is featured on the right of the photographs below. Among the stunning displays was a contribution from Quilts of Valour Canada, with one of their quilts showcased in the bottom left image. The remaining photographs highlight the cathedral filled with an array of beautiful examples of quilting, rug hooking, and stitching.

]]> As part of the 325th anniversary celebrations of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, The Very Rev’d William Bellamy was the guest preacher on Thanksgiving Sunday (October 13th). He was the cathedral’s dean during the 300th celebrations. The vicar at the time was The Rev’d Dr. Robert Rowlands, and on the same day, he presided at the Eucharist at this year’s Thanksgiving service. The Very Rev’d Roger Whalen is the present dean, and was a member of the choir 25 years ago.

At the top of this page, we see a photograph of Dean Bellamy, Dr. Rowlands, and Dean Whalen.

As mentioned above, this is the 325th anniversary of the Anglican Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in St. John’s, which is the oldest Anglican parish in Canada, and a National Historic Site.

]]> A memorial service was held on September 19th at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist to celebrate the life of the Late Queen Elizabeth II. Tributes were given by The Honourable Judy M Foote, the Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador, and The Honourable Dr. Andrew Furey, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Prayers were offered by the Interfaith Community, as well as a prayer of memorial by Dr. Syed Pirzada, President of the Muslim Association. A very touching sermon was given by the Rt. Rev’d Samuel Rose, Bishop of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador; the Very Rev’d Roger Whalen, Dean of the cathedral, officiated at the service. Music was provided by Sharon Whalen, organist at the cathedral, the cathedral choir, Shallaway Youth Choir, Shelley Neville, and Peter Halley. The service ended with Lament played by Ean Parsons, bagpiper.  An honour guard from the RNC and the military lined Gower Street.
